Canal Walk, Cape Town, is one of the world’s largest shopping centers, and a paradise for locals as well as a must-see for tourists. The shops range from popular line shops like Stuttafords, Edgars, Foschini, Truworths, Cape Union Mart etc to smaller shops catering for special needs, like Accessories where I bought my entire wedding outfit last year. It included my lovely dress, handbag and jewelry.

I savour treats like Marcel’s Frozen yogurt there whenever I can, not to mention buying a real American Cinnabun at the entrance to Nedbank and Mugg & Bean. Sale time is fabulous, with real bargains everywhere, and I use the opportunity to lay my hands on some designer wear at Stuttafords for a fraction of the normal price.
The whole shopping center has an estuary running along the one side, where visitors can sit outside under umbrellas and enjoy the scenery of slow boats and bird life, whilst sipping a Pina Colada.
The surrounding space is called Century City, and entertainment is never far away with our huge fun park, Ratanga Junction, where a ride on the Cobra makes your heart skip a beat.
When Madama Zingara is in town, she normally sets up her large tent opposite the center, and for months not a seat is available in the house as she entertains and vows us with acrobats and singers, and feeds us with her world-famous chocolate chili fillet. The nearby Life Day Spa in the African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel and Spa offers reprieve from sore bodies and feet after a shopping spree in soothing surrounds, which can be topped off with a delectable cappuccino at the Protea Hotel Colosseum.
